Scandinavian Almond Bars

Ingredients

  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped almonds

Preparation

Step 1

Combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. Beat margarine and sugar together. Add egg and almond and beat well. Add flour mixture.

Divide dough into fourths. Roll each into a 12 inch roll. Place two rolls on an ungreased cookie sheet. Flatten until 3 inches wide. Repeat with remaining rolls. Sprinkle all strips with almonds and press into dough. Bake at 325 for 12 to 14 minutes.

While still warm, cut crosswise at a diagonal into one inch strips and loosen from cookie sheet.

Combine 1 cup powdered sugar, 1/4 teaspoon almond extract, and enough milk to make a glaze. Drizzle over cooled cookies.
