Basic Turkey Brine

Ingredients

  • Suggested additions (add some or all):
  • 1 gallon of water
  • 1 cup of salt
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • Mix to dissolve salt and sugar
  • 1 bunch of sage
  • 1 bunch of parsley
  • 1 bunch of thyme
  • 1 head of garlic, roughly chopped
  • 4 bay leaves
  • 2 T black peppercorns, crushed

Preparation

Step 1

If adding the above, heat the basic brine to a simmer so the flavors will easily infuse into the liquid. Cool the brine before placing the turkey in it. A 15 pound turkey should be brined for 24 hours, for larger birds increase brining time to 36 hours.
