- 2 cups packed brown sugar
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 2 eggs
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour*
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 3 cups quick-cooking or regular oats
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 can (14 oz.) sweetened condensed milk
- 1 pkg. (12 oz.) semisweet chocolate chips
- 1 cup chopped nuts
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1/2 teaspoon salt

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix brown sugar, 1 cup butter, 1 teasoon vanilla, and the eggs. Stir in flour, baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt; stir in oats. Reserve 1/3 of the oat mixture. Press remaining oat mixture in a greased jelly roll pan, 15 1/2x10 1/2x1 inch.
Heat 2 tablespoons butter, the milk and chocolate chips over low heat, stirring constantly, until chocolate is melted; remove from heat. Stir in nuts, 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1/2 teaspoon salt. Spread over oat mixture in pan. Drop reserved oat mixture by rounded teaspoonfuls onto chocolate mixture.
Bake unitl golden brown, 25 to 30 minutes. Cut bars into about 2x1 inch, while warm. 70 bars; 135 calories per bar.
*If using self-rising flour, omit baking soda and 1/2 teaspoon salt.
