Ingredients
- a bottle of red wine
- handful of whole cloves
- handful of whole star anise
- sections of one orange
- 2 about 2tsp ground cinnamon
- 1 about 1 tsp nutmeg
Preparation
Step 1
I always played with the amount of ingredients until it tasted like I thought it should. First just get the wine warm without letting it boil.
Then add in the spices and orange sections. You might want to squeeze a few of the orange sections to make sure the juice gets out and mixed in well.
Then let it simmer without boiling for about 15 minutes or so. After that I would pour it through a strainer to get the whole spices out. Serve warm.
You can play with the ingredients on spiced wine to suite your taste. I learned this one while living with a large number of people from Germany. But, we were in China so perhaps a few of the normal ingredients couldn't be found. It always seemed good to me. I wouldn't buy terribly expensive wine.
We usually just dumped a packet of cider mulling spices into a bottle's worth of wine and simmered it a bit.
(Come to think of it, there were orange/lemon peels in there, too.)
