Ingredients
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1 1/2 cups sugar
- 2 eggs (room temperature)
- 2 1/2 cups flour
- 2 tsp salt
- 2 tsp cocoa
- 1 cup buttermilk (room temperature)
- 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract
- 2 oz red food coloring
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp vinegar
- Icing
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 1/4 cups confectioner sugar
- 3/4 cup shortening
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1/2 tsp almond extract
- For Green Cake use 1 oz green food coloring
Preparation
Step 1
Cream together shortening and sugar.
Beat in eggs until smooth and well blended.
Sift together flour, salt and cocoa.
Alternate adding buttermilk milk and dry ingredients. Beat after each addition.
Add vanilla or almond extract.
Add food coloring.
Disolve baking soda and vinegar together. Fold into batter.
Bake at 350 for 30 minutes in 2 greased and floured nine inch pans.
Icing
Cook milk and flour until thick and then cool.
Cream together confectioners sugar and shortening.
Add vanilla, almond extract and white sauce.
Beat until forsting becomes thick.
