Aunt Virginia's Peppernuts Cookies

Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup oleo
  • 1 1/4 dark Karo syrup
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 tsp soda
  • 1 Tbsp anise seed
  • 2 Tbsp boiling water
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt

Step 1

Before you start, be sure to crush up anise seed and pour boiling water on it. Let it set until you need it. If there are any real long stems, take them out. Mix all ingredients into a dough. Chill dough for a couple hours. Then roll long skinny rolls and cut off pieces and put on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375° for 12 minutes.

**Dough will be sticky. Roll a short piece at a time and cut off about 1/2" pices. It's best to scrape your paring knife on a dish or something like that. This recipe makes a lot of cookies.
