Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 ounces red food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoon soda
  • 1 tablespoon vinegar
  • Icing:
  • 5 tablespoons flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening, sugar and eggs. Make a paste of cocoa and food coloring. Add to mixture. Mix salt, vanilla and buttermilk. Add alternately with flour. Mix soda and vinegar and fold into mixture. Bake 30 minutes at 350 degrees in two 9" layers.

Icing:
Cook flour and milk to stiff paste. Cool completely. Cream butter and sugar. Add paste mixture. Add vanilla. Beat well until it looks like whipped cream. Spread on cool cake. Make swirls with fork or spoon.
