Ingredients

  • Frosting:
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • Juice and rind of 1/2 orange
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 1/2 cup sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 cup sour milk or buttermilk
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3 teaspoons butter
  • 9 tablespoons powdered sugar
  • Juice of 1/2 orange
  • Milk, if needed

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg and orange juice and rind. Dissolve baking soda in milk. Add to egg mixture alternately with flour. Spread on greased and floured 15 x 10 cookie sheet with sides. Bake 10 minutes; do not overbake.
Combine frosting ingredients adding milk to make desired consistency, if needed and spread over cooled cake. May add a bit more milk and sugar to make more frosting, if desired.

Note: if you do not have cake flour, add 1 teaspoon cornstarch to every 1 cup of regular flour

Noted: to sour milk, add 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar to every 1 cup of milk
