Ingredients
- Frosting:
- 2/3 cups shortening
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
- 3 eggs
- 2 1/3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 1/2 tsps ground cinnamon
- 3/4 tsp ground nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp ground cloves
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 1/2 cup butter, softened
- 1 tsp maple flavored extract
- 4 cups confectioners' sugar
- 2 tbsp milk
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour two 9-inch cake pans or one oblong pan.
Cream shortening and sugars. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Sift flour, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt together. Add flour mixture to shortening mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with flour mixture.
Bake at 350 degrees for 20 -25 minutes or 35 minutes for oblong pan, or until toothpick comes out clean. Cool. Frost.
To make frosting: Cream butter and 1/2 cup shortening together. Add maple flavoring. Gradually add confectioners' sugar. Gradually add milk and continue beating until light and airy. Add more milk if necessary. Color with maple coloring, if desired.
