This is a variation of a Rachael Ray recipe. I tweaked the ingredients and amounts to suit our tastes and needs.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground round or 85% lean ground beef
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 tablespoon steak seasoning, such as mccormick brand montreal seasoning
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 1 medium red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon red wine vinegar
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 1/2 cups tomato sauce
  • 3 1/2 tablespoons tomato paste

Preparation

Step 1

Heat a large skillet over medium high heat.
Toss chopped onions, pepper, montreal seasoning and brown sugar in a bowl.
Over medium heat spread the meat around heated pan and begin to break it up. After turning once or twice, add the onion, pepper, montreal seasoning and brown sugar mixture.
Cook until meat is browned. Drain. Return to medium heat, add red wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce and saute with meat for 5 minutes. Add tomato sauce and paste to pan. Stir to combine.
Reduce heat to simmer and cook Sloppy Joe mixture 10 to 15 minutes longer or until most of the moisture is absorbed.
Spoon 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sloppy joe mixture onto toasted bun bottoms and cover with bun tops.
