walnut baklava

traditional baklava--amazingly good

Ingredients

  • syrup:
  • 4 c finely chopped walnuts (I use a blender/food processor)
  • 1/4 c sugar
  • 1 T ground cinnamon
  • 1 c butter--melted
  • 1 package (16 oz) phyllo dough-thawed
  • 1 c sugar
  • 1/2 c water
  • 1/4 c honey
  • 1 t lemon juice
  • 1 t vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

In a bowl, combine the walnuts, sugar and cinnamgrease a 9x13 pan with some of the melted butter. Unroll phyllo dough sheets but keep covered with plastic wrap or a damp towel while assembling baklava.

Place one sheet of phyllo in baking dish, brush with butter. Top with a second sheet and brush with butter. Sprinkle with 1/4 c nut mixture. Repeat these steps 18 times. The last layer should be 2 sheets of the buttered phyllo dough. Cut in to 2 inch diamonds with a sharp knife **very important to cut prior to baking**

bake at 350 for 45-55 minutes or until golden brown. meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine the syrup ingredients--bring to a boil. Reduce heat,m simmer uncovered for 10 minutes. Pour syrup over the warm baklava. cool on a wire rack
