French Onion Soup

Ingredients

  • 1/4 c. butter
  • 3 onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 tsp white sugar
  • 1 tbsp. All-purpose flour
  • 2-1/2 c. water
  • 1/2 c. red wine
  • 2 (10.5 oz) can condensed beef broth
  • 1 French baguette
  • 8 oz. sliced Swiss cheese

Preparation

Step 1

1. Melt butter over low heat, add onions and sugar. Let simmer on low for 1 hour and 45 minutes.

2. Stir in flour and cook for 1 minute. Add wine and deglaze pan, add water and beef broth. heat to boiling. Reduce heat to low, cover soup and simmer 10 minutes.

3. Cut French bread into discs for top of soup. Place some soup into soup turbines, top with bread, top with Swiss cheese. Place under broiler until cheese is melted and bubbly.
