Real Red Cake

Ingredients

  • Icing:
  • 1 1/2 c. sugar
  • 1/2 c. shortening
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 T. cocoa
  • 2 oz. red food color
  • 2 1/4 c. flour
  • 1 c. buttermilk
  • 1 t. salt
  • 1 t.vanilla
  • 1 t. vinegar
  • 1 t. soda
  • 3 T. cornstarch
  • 1 c. milk
  • 1 c.butter
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 t. vanilla

Preparation

Step 1

Cream sugar and shortening. Add 2 eggs.
Make paste of cocoa and food color, and add to above.
Add flour and buttermilk alternately, and salt.
Add 1 t. vanilla and 1 t. vinegar to which 1 t. soda has been added.
Bake 350 for 30 -35 min. (watch, don't burn.)
ICING: Cook cornstarch and milk in double boiler until thick.
Cool.
Cream Butter and sugar until fluffy. Add vanilla.
Blend cooled mix into creamed mix and beat slowly till like whipped cream
