Ingredients
- 1 stick unsalted butter
- 1/2 cup shortening
- 2 cups sugar
- 5 large eggs
- 2 1/2 t. pure vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour, sifted
- 1/2 t. salt
- 1/2 t. baking powder
- 1/2 t. baking soda
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Grease and flour a 10" tube pan. Cream butter, shortening, and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. (This step is very important, so do not be tempted to add all the eggs at once. Adding them one at a time keeps the batter creamy and gradually dense.) Blend in vanilla.
Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and soda together; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beginning and ending with flour mixture. Mix well after each addition.
Spoon batter into prepared pan. Bake for 1 hour and 15 minutes or until toothpick inserted one inch from edge comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes; turn out onto wire rack or floured board and cool completely.
After cooling, sift powdered sugar on top of the cake before slicing, if desired.
