Savory Cheese Bread

Makes 2 (8x4x3-in.) loaves
Ingredients
- 2 3/4 cups unsifted all-purpose flour
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup (1/4-lb.) butter
- 1 pkg. (1/4-oZ.) active dry yeast
- 1/4 cup warm water
- 1 cup milk
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1 pkg.p/1/2 of 2 3/4-oz.box) dry onion soup mix
- 1 cup (4-oz. pkg.) shredded cheddar cheese
Preparation
Step 1
In large mixing bowl place flour, sugar, salt and butter. Cut through mixture with pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
Dissolve yeast in warm water. Add to crumbly mixture along with milk and egg. Beat with spoon until well blended. Mix together 2 tablespoons onion soup mix and 1/4 cup shredded cheese. Set aside. Add remaining soup mix and cheese to batter. Stir well.
Divide batter evenly between 2 well greased 8x4 x3-in dishes. Sprinkle loaves with reserved cheese mixture. Cover lightly and let rise in warm place 1 1/2 to 2 hours, just until dough is slightly puffy.
Microwave one loaf at a time. Microwave at Medium (5) 13 to 15 Minutes. Rotating 1/4 turn after 7 minutes. Carefully remove breads to cooling rack. Serve warm or cool.
