One can also use either light or dark brown sugar as a substitute, but one has to combine three-quarter cups of either types of sugars with a quarter cup of water and heat the mixture to dissolve the sugar.

If a person is using molasses for baking and needs a substitute for this ingredient, then one can replace a cup of molasses by using a combination of a quarter teaspoon of tartar cream, a quarter cup of a hot liquid and three-quarter cups of brown sugar.

Although one uses these substitutes for molasses, its distinct flavor may be missing with these substitutes. However, one should not use blackstrap molasses as a substitute for light molasses because its flavor is too strong.
