BUTTER HORNS

Ingredients

  • Filling:
  • 4 cups flour
  • 1/2 lb. butter or margarine
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1 package yeast
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup sour cream
  • 6 egg whites
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 lb. ground walnuts
  • Quarter of an apple

Preparation

Step 1

Sift flour and measure. Mix ith sugar, salt and butter as for pie crust. Make a paste of some of the sour cream and yeast. Beat egg yolks, add to sour cream and yeast mixture. Then combine the two mixtures and knead lightly to form soft dough. Break off small portion and roll out 1/2" thick. Cut dough into 2" diamond shaped pieces. Place 1 teaspoon of filling on center of dough and fold long corners of pieces together and press lightly.

Bake on cookie sheet at 350 degrees for 8 minutes. Then remove from oven brush with beaten egg yolks and return to oven 10 minutes longer or until golden brown. Sprinkle top with powdered sugar.

Filling:

Beat egg whites until stiff. Add sugar to taste about 1 cup beat well. Add about 1 lb. walnuts until filling is solid. Add a quarter apple grated if desired. Apple keeps filling moist.
