Ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 1 tsp. baking powder
- 1 tsp. baking soda
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 1 cup shortening or butter
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 4 Tbsp. milk

Step 1
Cream shortening with sugar. Add eggs, milk and vanilla, and mix further. Sift flour, baking powder, soda, nutmeg and salt together. Gradually add to creamed ingredients to form dough. Chill overnight. Divide dough and roll out on lightly floured surface. Cut shapes with cookie cutter dipped with flour. Sprinkle with granulated sugar or decorative sugar before baking if not using for Christmas cookies. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes, not until brown.
For Christmas cookies, omit sugar sprinkling step and frost after baked and cooled.
