Ingredients

  • 1 3 1/2- to 4-pound fresh beef brisket
  • 2 cups water
  • 1/4 cup catsup
  • 1 envelope {1/2 of a 2.2-ounce package) onion soup mix
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon bottled minced garlic
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup cold water
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

Preparation

Step 1

Place beef brisket in a 3 1/2- to 4-quart slow cooker, cutting to fit if necessary.
In a bowl combine the 2 cups water, catsup, soup mix, Worcestershire sauce, cinnamon, garlic, and pepper. Pour over brisket. Cover; cook on low-heat setting for 10 to 11 hours or on high-heat setting for 5 to 5 1/2 hours.
Remove beef; keep warm. Pour juices into a glass measuring cup.
Skim fat. Measure 1 1/2 cups cooking liquid; discard remaining liquid. For gravy, in a small saucepan stir the 1/4 cup cold water into the flour. Stir in the 1 1/2 cups cooking liquid. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.
Cook and stir 1 minute more.
Slice beef thinly across the grain. Serve with the hot gravy.
