Mom's 15 Bean Soup in Crockpot

Ingredients

  • 1 20 oz pkg (567 g) Bean Soup mix
  • 1 lb (454g) ham hocks or ham bones
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • 2 garlic cloves minced
  • 8 cups cold water
  • 1-5 1/2 oz can tomato paste blended with 1 can hot water
  • 28 oz (796ml) can diced tomatoes
  • 10 oz (284ml) can tomatoes with green chilies
  • 2 slices black fores ham diced (300 grams)
  • Packet of ham flavour from bean pkg

Preparation

Step 1

Sort and wash beans. Place in a slow cooker or large bowl and cover with water 2 inches above the beans. Let soak overnight. Do not heat. Drain off and discard water
Add to the beans, ham bones,garlic and 8 cups of cold water
Cover and cook on low 7 hours
Remove ham bone. Cut any meat off bone and put back into soup
Stir in remaining ingredients and continue cooking on HIGH another hour.
Add contents of ham pkg 1-2 min before cooking is completed
Salt and pepper to taste

Can be frozen in containers
