Doughnuts, Yeast

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup lukewarm water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 pkg active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten
  • 3 1/4 - 3 1/ 2cups flour
  • 1/2 cup sugar

Preparation

Step 1

In a small bowl, dissolve 1 tsp sugar in lukewarm water.
Sprinkle yeast over water and set aside.
Combine milk, 1/4 cup sugar, shortening, and salt in medium saucepan.
Heat to dissolve sugar and melt shortening and cool to lukewarm.
Stir yeast to completely dissolve and add lukewarm milk mixture.
Beat in egg.
Add 2 cups flour and beat until smooth.
Stir in enough remaining flour to make soft dough.
Knead dough on lightly floured surface, adding more flour as needed until dough is smooth and elastic.
Place in lightly greased bowl, turning to coat dough.
Let rise in a warm place 40-50 minutes until doubled.
Punch down and turn out on lightly floured surface.
Divide dough in half and roll each half to 1/3" sheet.
Cut with doughnut cutter.
Place on greased baking sheet and cover.
Let rise in warm place for 30 minutes until doubled.
Fry 3 minutes (turn halfway).
Drain.
Shake in bag containing 1/2 cup sugar or dip in honey glaze.

Honey Glaze:
Add 1 1/2 tbsp honey to 3 1/2 tbsp warm water and 1 cup icing sugar

Dip warm doughnuts and let dry on rack.
