Ingredients

  • 1 cup shortening
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 egg, slightly beaten
  • 5 cups all purpose-flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbs cinnamon
  • 2 tsp ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg

Preparation

Step 1

- Beat shortening and sugar together until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg and beat well.
- Sift together dry ingredients. Combine with shortening mixture and form into 5 balls.
- Wrap dough in wax paper; chill for 1 hour
- Preheat oven to 350
- Roll out 1 ball of dough on floured surface to 1/8 inch thick. (Keep balls refrigerated until needed) Cut with floured cookie cutters.
- Bake each batch on buttered baking sheets for 8-10 min.
