Ingredients
- Frosting:
- 3/4 c shortening
- 2 1/4 c sugar
- 3 eggs
- 3 1-oz bottles red food coloring
- 1 1/2 tsp vanilla
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 tsp cocoa
- 1 1/2 c buttermilk
- 3 1/2 c flour
- 1 1/2 tsp vinegar
- 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
- 3 Tbsp flour
- 1 c milk
- 2 sticks butter
- 1 c granulated sugar
- 1 tsp vanilla

Preparation
Step 1
Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy.
Add beaten eggs; set aside.
Empty food coloring into small mixing bowl.
Refill each bottle with water, and add to food coloring.
Mix cocoa in with food coloring; add the mixture to the shortening.
Blend in buttermilk and vanilla; alternating with flour and salt.
Beat thoroughly.
Fold in vinegar and baking soda.
Bake in three greased and floured layer pans for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
Frosting:
Combine flour and milk and cook until thick.
Cover with wax paper and cool.
Cream remaining ingredients and add cooled mixture; beat until smooth.
