Ingredients

    c shortening

  • 2 1/4

    c sugar

    eggs

    1-oz bottles red food coloring

  • 1 1/2

    tsp vanilla

  • 1 1/2

    tsp salt

  • 3

    tsp cocoa

  • 1 1/2

    c buttermilk

  • 3 1/2

    c flour

  • 1 1/2

    tsp vinegar

  • 1 1/2

    tsp baking soda

  • Frosting:

    Tbsp flour

    c milk

    sticks butter

  • 1

    c granulated sugar

  • 1

    tsp vanilla

Directions

Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add beaten eggs; set aside. Empty food coloring into small mixing bowl. Refill each bottle with water, and add to food coloring. Mix cocoa in with food coloring; add the mixture to the shortening. Blend in buttermilk and vanilla; alternating with flour and salt. Beat thoroughly. Fold in vinegar and baking soda. Bake in three greased and floured layer pans for 35 minutes at 350 degrees. Frosting: Combine flour and milk and cook until thick. Cover with wax paper and cool. Cream remaining ingredients and add cooled mixture; beat until smooth.
