Ingredients
- 5 c bran flakes
- 5 1/2 c very hot water
- 1/2 c honey or brown sugar
- 1/2 c shortening
- 2 Tbsp salt
- 3 pkg yeast
- 1/2 c warm water
- 1 Tbsp sugar
- 11-13 c white flour

Preparation
Step 1
In a large bowl mix bran flakes and hot water.
Add honey (or brown sugar), shortening, and salt and cool to lukewarm.
Meanwhile, dissolve yeast in warm water to which 1 Tbsp sugar has been added.
Add to shortening mixture; add white flour to make a soft dough, about 10-11 c.
Turn out on floured board and knead for 10 minutes, adding another 1-2 c flour until dough can be managed.
Let rise until doubles, knead and let rise again.
Shape into loaves; allow to rise to top of pans.
Bake at 350 degrees 30-35 minutes until nicely browned and loaf sounds hollow when tapped. Yields 4 loaves.
