Ingredients

  • Nut Filling:
  • 1 cup milk (1-1/2)
  • ½ cup shortening (3/4)
  • ½ cup sugar (3/4)
  • 1 tsp salt (1-1/2)
  • 1 small cake compressed yeast
  • 3 beaten eggs (4)
  • 4-1/2 cups flour (6-3/4)
  • 1 lb ground walnuts
  • 1 cup hot milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 3 T butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • Combine and bring to a boil, stirring constantly.
  • 2 beaten eggs
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • Add eggs and cook slowly until thick. Add salt. Cool and spread on dough.

Preparation

Step 1

Scald milk, then add sugar, shortening, and salt and stir until all are dissolved. Cool to lukewarm. Add beaten eggs and mix well. Add flour to form a smooth, soft dough. Knead lightly on floured surface. Place in a greased bowl, cover and let rise in a warm room of 80-85 until light and double in bulk. Divide dough into thirds and roll each third on lightly floured surface to the size of a 9” pie pan. Cut each round into 12 pie-shaped pieces. Spread each with nut mixture, then roll at wide edge and with melted butter. Cover and let rise until very light. Bake at 400 for 20-25 minutes. While still warm, brush with confectioners sugar, moistened with hot milk. Flavor as desired.
