Bread & Butter Pickles

Ingredients

  • 4 quarts cucumbers sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 4 cups sugar
  • 4 hot peppers - seeded
  • 1 teaspoon powder turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 2 tablespoons mustard seed
  • 4 cups cider vinegar
  • 2 cups onions - sliced
  • 4 green peppers

Preparation

Step 1

Use only fresh cucumbers. Wash. Do not peel. Slice very thin. Sprinkle with 1/2 cup salt. Let stand for 3 hours - then drain.

Bring sugar, turmeric, mustard seed, celery seed, vinegar, bell pepper & hot peppers to boiling point.

Add cucumbers & onions.

Heat thoroughly but DO NOT boil.

Place in sterilized hot jars and seal.
