  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/3 cup sugar
  • 7 ounces milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 eggs
  • Red and yellow food coloring
  • 1 Container of white frosting
  • 5 miniature chocolate bars

Step 1

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Grease and flour two 8-inch square baking pans. Place pans on a large cookie sheet and set aside.

Measure shortening into large mixing bowl. In a medium bowl, combine sifted cake flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Sift dry mixture over the shortening in the mixing bowl.

Add vanilla to the milk. Add 2/3 of the milk mixture to the mixing bowl over the dry ingredients. Turn mixer on low until combined; increase speed to medium-high and beat 1 minute. Add eggs and remaining milk mixture and beat 3 minutes more.

Bake for 30 minutes.

Remove to wire racks to cool completely. When cool, cut each layer in half. Arrange alternate colors to form squares. Use butter frosting between layers, halves, sides and top.

Cut chocolate bars into squares and dot on top of the cake.
