Ingredients

  • 3/4 cup shortening (Crisco)
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preparation

Step 1

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg and beat well.
Sift dry ingredients and add to above mixture.
Roll by hand into balls about ¾ to 1 inch diameter. Roll each ball in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet.
Bake for 15 minutes at 375°. Watch carefully; they burn easily.
I also have a recipe doubling the ingredients. That one makes about 5 dozen cookies.
