Ingredients

  • 3/4

    cup shortening (Crisco)

  • 1

    cup sugar

  • 1/4

    cup molasses

  • 1

    egg

  • 2

    cups flour

  • 2

    teaspoons baking soda

  • 1

    teaspoon cinnamon

  • 1

    teaspoon ground cloves

  • 1

    teaspoon ground ginger

  • 1/2

    teaspoon salt

Directions

Cream shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg and beat well. Sift dry ingredients and add to above mixture. Roll by hand into balls about ¾ to 1 inch diameter. Roll each ball in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake for 15 minutes at 375°. Watch carefully; they burn easily. I also have a recipe doubling the ingredients. That one makes about 5 dozen cookies.
