  • 3 1/2 cups sifted flour
  • 3 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 1/2 tsp nutmeg
  • 3/4 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs beaten
  • 3/4 cup milk
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 2 Tbsp soft shortening

Step 1

Sift together dry ingredients and set aside. Combine wet ingredients except for shortening in large bowl. Beat until sugar is dissolved. Then add shortening. Beat in half of dry ingredients. Add remaining flour mixture and mix well. The dough will be soft. Cover with wax paper and chill for at least 30 minutes.

Remove 1/3 of dough from bowl. Out a little flour on a rolling board. Flour the pin lightly. Roll out dough until it is about 1/4-1/2 inch thick. Cut into shapes. Fill a 3qt pot with oil halfway. Heat slowly until 375F. Slip a wide thermometer under each shape. Let it slip into the hot oil. Fry only as many as the pot will hold. Turn with a fork when brown on a side to brown other. Cook for about 3 minutes altogether. Line a dripping pan with paper towels or brown paper. Let doughnuts drain dry. When cool, coat with sugar. Cook holes for fun.
