Walnut Crumb Apple Pie
By Addie
“We loved the crumb topping on this pie so much, we begged Grandma to make an entire pie out of it.”
Ingredients
- 5 cups Red Delicious apples, peeled, thinly sliced
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 3/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup firmly packed dark brown sugar
- 1/3 cup plus 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour, divided
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1 (9-inch) unbaked pie shell
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 tablespoons cold butter, cut into small pieces
Preparation
Step 1
Preheat oven to 425°F. Place baking sheet in oven while preheating oven. (Placing pie on hot baking sheet helps bottom crust to bake more evenly.)
Combine apples, lemon juice and vanilla extract in large bowl; set aside.
Combine brown sugar, 3 tablespoons flour, cinnamon and nutmeg in medium bowl. Add brown sugar mixture to apple mixture; toss to coat. Spoon into pie shell; set aside.
Heat a 10-inch nonstick skillet over medium-high heat until very hot. Add walnuts and cook, stirring constantly, until lightly browned and fragrant, for about 2 minutes. Remove from heat; set aside.
Combine remaining 1/3 cup flour and granulated sugar in small bowl. Cut in butter using pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse crumbs; sprinkle evenly over pie. Top with walnuts.
Bake until pie is bubbly and apples are tender in center, about 35 to 40 minutes.

Grandma's Secret Trick:
Even after Grandma had a self-cleaning oven, she took care to prevent food from spilling over onto the bottom of the oven. When it came to fruit pies with bubbly fillings, Grandma placed the pie on a foil-lined baking sheet to catch any drippings during baking.
