Bisquick Coffee Cake

By

Everyone needs a classic coffee cake recipe. I’ve taken the liberty of doubling the streusel topping, you’ll thank me for it. Simple to make and leaves your house smelling really good on Sunday morning.

Ingredients

  • Cinnamon Streusel (below)
  • 2 cups Original Bisquick mix
  • 2/3 cup milk or water
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 egg

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 375°F. Grease 9-inch round pan. Make Cinnamon Streusel; reserve.

Stir remaining ingredients until blended. Mix in a 1/4 of the Streusel topping and spread in pan. Cover with Cinnamon Streusel.

Bake 25 minutes or until golden brown, testing with a toothpick.

CINNAMON STREUSEL TOPPING:

2/3 cup Original Bisquick mix
2/3 cup packed brown sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 tablespoons butter (firm)

Mix all ingredients in small bowl until crumbly. Cutting them with a knife and fork helps separate the butter. Spread topping mix over dough and drag a butter knife across like you were making a tic-tac-toe board several times.

REVIEWS:

I was looking for the orginal recipe for coffee cake when I went to the Bisquick website. Glad to find the recipe that my “HomeEc” teacher gave me…back in 1963. You must put this recipe back on the box for new brides and for the baby boomers who may have forgotten this simple, but delicious breakfast or brunch delight.

I’m right there with you Karen only it was in the late 50s for me! I couldn’t believe the recipe wasn’t still on the box. What would we do without computers????

I too have been searching for this recipe. My mother used to make this for us when we growing up in the mid 60’s, & we would devour it in almost in one seating. Thank you for posting the original.

Thank you for putting up the recipe. I made this all the time when I first got married in ‘63. Made it for years. So glad to find it again.

Thank you so much for this recipe! I, too, had looked on the Bisquick box and couldn’t find it. My mother would use just the cake recipe, without the topping, for her pineapple upside down cake. I’m making it in memory of her for Easter tomorrow. Here’s to you, Mom! Miss you.

Thank you!Thank you! I have been looking for this recipe on the outside of Bisquick boxes for weeks – I thought maybe it was seasonal and I was just going to have to keep looking. Then I thought I’d do what we do now – google it! I have fond memories of baking this recipe with my Mom. She passed away just a year ago but she is alive in all she taught me! Thank you for the recipe and thank you Mom for your love!

Thank you so much again for posting this. I always make it for coffee hour at church and it is always a hit.

You had the recipe printed on the box of Bisquick Mix, this is the recipe that i am looking for. Years ago, in the 50’s, my girlfriend and I would whip up this coffee cake and play cards all day long. This was a ritual for us and we loved it.

Love this cake … I add a touch of vanilla also—-yum! A topping hint: My son had trouble with this, so I told him to crumble the dry ingredients with his hands first (washed of course), and then to open the cube of margarine part way and make several downward slices, one way..then the other. Makes for ‘lots’ of little chunks when sliced into the topping. Thanks!!

Thank you for the recipe. I made this in the 50’s and have been looking for it for a long time. It is so GOOD. This is the one I remember from the box.

I also have been trying to find this recipe on the Bisquick box. I used to make this with my grandmother and it is the best coffeecake recipe!

Thanks for this recipe. I used to make this as a teenager for my family and I made it for my wife when I was first married, but lost the recipe over the years. I plan on making it tonight !!

We also double the topping, but here’s an alternative way to assemble the cake: After preparing the topping and the batter, grease a loaf pan and place half the batter in the pan. Sprinkle half the topping on that, then repeat with the remaining batter and topping.

Hurray! I am so glad you were kind enough to give me access to this great coffee cake recipe from the past. There are only a few items that an entire family loves. This coffee cake is one of the things that found all of our family (six of us) rushing to the table for on Sunday morning before church. Thank you so much for caring. Please return the recipe to the box for the young people to enjoy. It’s easy to make and yummy to eat.

Gee, Thank you! It is 12:38 pm where I am at and my Mom is craving it, she asked me to make it.. I looked at the box, POOF! It’s gone… ): But thank you for posting this, and thank you for doubling the topping for us. There was never enough.. (:

I, too, was looking for this recipe on the Bisquick box. I think it’s the same one I made 60 years ago, but from my memories, I thought the streusel was put on top and then swirled in with a dinner knife, making the cake itself with swirls of streusel. In any event, I’m glad to have found it.

I also agree that it is a great and quick coffee cake, and even better with the doubled topping.

Finally, I have this old recipe again. My son, 45, recently mentioned this coffee cake that we used to have on Sunday morn. before church. I make it this am after finding it again. Yes I double the topping too. I hink it should go back on the box.

I totally agree this recipe should never have been removed from the Bisquick Box.This recipe is an all time favorite, my grandchildren love it and so do my boys as well as myself as did my mom who made it for us kids, all 16 of whom have now passed it down to our generations as you can see.So if you are reading these comments, please add the orginial coffee cake recipe back on the Bisquick Box.
