First, add the butter to a large skillet or dutch oven over medium high heat. Dump in the ground beef and cook it till it’s brown.

Next, cut a medium onion in half from root to tip. Lay one half of the onion face down on a cutting board, then make several vertical slices across the onion.
Throw it into the meat mixture…
And stir it to combine. Add a little salt and plenty of freshly ground black pepper to spice things up a bit.
Add a cup or cup and a half of water…
And stir it in.
Next, add in a little brown sugar, some chili powder, and some dry mustard.
Stir it around and let it simmer for 15 to 20 minutes, just to let the flavors all meld.
Along the way, you can also add in a few dashes of Worcestershire sauce, more salt and pepper if needed, and even (I do this often) a tablespoon or two of tomato paste to give it a little deeper tomato flavor. Taste and test along the way—you can even add a little Tabasco to really set things on fire.
Add a heapin’ helpin’ of the meat mixture.
Add butter to a large skillet or dutch oven over medium high heat. Add ground beef and cook until brown. Drain most of the fat and discard.
Add onions, green pepper, and garlic. Cook for a few minutes, or until vegetables begin to get soft.
Add ketchup, brown sugar, chili pepper, dry mustard, and water. Stir to combine and simmer for 15 minutes, adding salt and pepper to taste. Also add tomato paste, Worcestershire, and Tabasco if desired. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
Spread rolls with butter and brown on a griddle or skillet. Spoon meat mixture over the rolls, topping with a slice of cheese if it makes your skirt fly up. Serve hot with kettle cooked chips!
This is one that I will try,bet it beats the can stuff by a mile. Thanks Rea
My mom used to make these for us when we were growing up. I can smell them now. You were great on the View last week. I taped the show, came home from work and turned it on immediately.

I was trying to decide what to make for dinner. You just made up my mind. Thanks
This is so timely! I am in charge of a daddy/daughter party tomorrow night and the main course? SLOPPY JOES!
I always made my sloppy joes with ground beef and a little packet of pre-made spice mix. And then add tomato paste. I love sloppy joes!
Sloppy joes are so easy! Why does anyone use the canned stuff? It’s interesting to see how you do it. I add some apple cider vinegar and more brown sugar for a bit more barbecue taste. Those buns look yummy too.
I’m not a sloppy joe person but my husband is. So, as the oldest of three (two younger brothers), I spend my life trying to make other people happy and make these for my hub. Since he is somewhat adverse to eating them every day for a week, I have found the mixture freezes beautifully. Just portion them out in cup size containers. It is an easy go to for him when I am on the ball field with my grandsons. GO EAGLES!
Sloppy Joes are so good … especially with cheese melted on top! I’ll have to toast the buns on mine next time I make them. Thanks for the idea.
daddy and i were happily shopping away in the kitchen gadget section of gamble’s hardware store…when this rumbly tumbly feeling over took my stomach. as daddy wisked me to the car – he gave the heads up to my mother that she needed to finish up her shopping, find my sisters and “come on.”
My kids love sloppy joes, but I usually make the lame kind with the can of flavoring. I’ll have to try this!!
You know, this is the PRECISE (pretty much…they don’t use dry mustard) sloppy joe recipe my beloved Nana and my mom makes. It’s GOTTA be Heinz kethcup (ask em!) and of course, here, in the NE it’s called Barbecue not sloppy joes. But really it’s the same thing. I never made it bc I don’t much like the stuff. My husband and my kids and grands LIKE sloppy joes so when I am not home for dinner and he’s in charge, hubby makes MANWICH for them all. When, one day, I said well. I’ll break down and make homemade sloppy joes like my mom and nana make and raise the bar a little they were thrilled. And when all was said and done they said it tasted like thier beloved manwich. Hmmm. I still think of the two, Nana’s, mom’s, and Ree’s are better. Even if I don’t much like the things…
I have to make sloppy joe’s soon…
Huh. I didn’t know you could make these things from scratch. (Joking!) (Kind of.) My husband will be pleased!
Oh yum! I make mine with onion, pepper, ketchup and Worcestershire sauce, all to taste and love it, but I may just give these a try!
Add Jalepenos!!! OMG!!! They make any sloppy joe!
Yum yum! This recipe is pretty similar to the one we use, though we add a little white vinegar and prepared mustard, not dry.
My friend and I used to make Sloppy Joe’s and melt cheese into the mixture (Velveeta works well). The result? Sloppy Josephines,
I have a similar recipe but I leave out the brown sugar…my husband does not eat added sugar. They are still great!
If you have children who don’t like the texture of onion and pepper pieces in ground beef dishes (like I do) puree them in the food processor then add as usual. You get the flavor and they won’t spend the entire dinner picking out every single piece!

People always think I am weird when I say I add brown sugar!! You do it too!! (high five me now)
Mmmm, one of the things I miss most about red meat. My old sloppy joe recipe used the chili sauce, and also had some Wheaties (yes! the cereal!) stirred in at the end, which helps them hold together nicely. I personally like the chips right ON the sloppy joe. I wonder if it would work with ground turkey …
Oh, man, I have not had sloppy joes since I was a little kid at camp. They totally bring back memories. I am going to have to make these! And while the ones I remember from camp certainly didn’t include extra chili sauce, I’m going to have to go for some extra kick, as you suggest. And maybe even a jalapeno minced up in there too… yum!!
Yummy! No more canned manwich for me. This definitely looks better and I bet it tastes awesome!! Along with the cheese on top, we also add some of the chips to the sandwich itself for extra crunchiness – in our house a sandwich isn’t a sandwich unless you stick potato chips into it
I want one of these right now! I like the one with cheese. It looks so good and this is so easy. Why use the canned stuff when you can make this?
Sticky, sweet, and oh, so divine. Make 'em and experience it firsthand!
