Holiday Shortbread

Ingredients

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 egg yolk1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 egg white
  • 1/2 cup sliced almonds
  • 1/4 cup red and/or green tinted sugar

Preparation

Step 1

1Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease a 13 × 9-inch baking pan.
.2Combine butter and granulated sugar in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer set at low speed until creamy.
.3Add flour to butter mixture and mix well. Beat in egg yolk and vanilla extract. Spread in prepared baking pan.
.4Beat egg white in a small bowl until foamy. Spread on top of dough with a pastry brush. Sprinkle the almonds and tinted sugar on top.
.5Bake until lightly browned, about 25 minutes. Cool in the pan on a wire rack. Cut into squares.
