Oven-Steamed Lutefisk

  • BUTTER SAUCE:
  • 3 pounds ready-to-cook lutefisk
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 2 sticks butter
  • 1/3 cup hot water
  • 3 tablespoons lemon juice

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Generously butter a baking dish, preferably one with a cover

Place the fish, skin-side down, in the baking dish. Dot with the butter and sprinkle with the salt. Cover.

Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the fish flakes (it may have a gelatinous appearance even though it is cooked).

To make the butter sauce, in a saucepan, melt the butter. Stir in the hot water and lemon juice. Serve in a gravy boat with a spoon or ladle so that it can be stirred with each serving.

Serve the fish hot with the butter sauce.
