Spiced Peach Sauce
Since frozen peaches are available all year long, Grandma would make several big batches of Spiced Peach Sauce at holiday time for gift giving. Whether she gave a jar of sauce by itself or packaged it in a decorative basket along with a jar of her buckwheat waffle mix and a pretty dish towel, Grandma always included a handwritten card with the sauce recipe. She loved sharing her tradition with others.
- 2 pounds frozen sliced unsweetened peaches, thawed
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
- 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1.Combine sliced peaches and the thawing liquid, sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon and ground nutmeg in a medium heavy saucepan.
2.Bring the mixture to a boil over high heat. Reduce heat and boil until thickened, stirring occasionally and breaking peaches into small pieces with back of wooden spoon, about 45 to 50 minutes. Remove saucepan from heat; cool completely.
3.Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 months. Makes about 3 cups .
