Maple Syrup Pie

Grandma knew that the quickest way to seal the edges of the piecrust was to press down on the edges with the prongs of a dinner fork. This common technique also gave Grandma's beautiful pies a distinctive ruffled edge.

Ingredients

  • 1 (15-ounce) package refrigerated pie pastry
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Preparation

Step 1

1.Preheat the oven to 425ºF.

2.Line an 8-inch pie plate with one of the pie pastries.

3.Combine maple syrup and 1/2 cup water in a medium saucepan and mix well. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, stirring continually. Boil, stirring continually, for 5 minutes.

4.Combine cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl and mix well. Stir into maple syrup mixture.

5.Cook the mixture, stirring continually, until thickened, about 4 minutes.

6.Add walnuts and butter. Cook, stirring continually, until butter is melted.

7.Spoon into prepared pie plate. Top with remaining pastry. Seal edges and cut vents. Bake until golden, about 25 minutes.
