Ingredients
- 1 cup flour
- 1 cup beer ( I prefer Budweiser)
- 2 large onions (I prefer Vidalias)
- Vegetable oil (For Deep Fat Frying)
Preparation
Step 1
Put the flour into a bowl and make a well in the center. Pour the beer into the well and whisk until combined. Let rest, covered for 1 hour.
Peel onions and cut crosswise 1/3 inch thick and separate into rings.
Dust the onion rings with the additional flour, shaking off the excess, and coat them with the batter.
Working in batches, fry the onion rings in 2 inches of preheated 370 degrees, oil until they are golden.
Transfer them with a slotted spoon to paper towels to drain and sprinkle them with salt to taste.

DH and I both loved these rings and I especially loved how I felt doing something I'd never tried before. I used Egils (an Icelandic premium lager) and took a tiny detour from the prep because I thought it would work better for me. I put all the rings in a shaker bag w/1 heaping tbsp of flour, shook the heck out of it and then let them sit in the bag while the batter rested. I had no trouble w/the batter coating or frying, the crunch was great and I was amazed how little oil they absorbed. Despite review comments Re seasoning, I didn't add any as DH is on a severely sodium-restricted diet. I'd normally add salt (or Old Bay) for myself, but was glad I didn't after I dipped the 1st ring in some ketchup for a taste test. Yum! Thx for sharing this recipe. Good stuff!
These rings are yummy! I agree with mommyoffour - these have a great crisp, and it was quick and easy to make. I used Coors Light as my beer; I think this may have caused the flavor to turn out a little bland, so I took whtbxrmom's advice and added garlic powder, seasoned salt, and table salt to the batter. I also "double dipped" the battered ring into the flour and back into the batter again to get more batter on the ring. I'll definitely be making these again.
These are such a perfect side. And easy, we loved the crisp on these. Thank you for sharing.
Really nice classic onion ring with a nice crispy exterior and perfectly done interior. I used a nice wheat beer, vidallia onions, and kosher salt
These onion rings fry up nice. There is nothing worse than rings that are done on the outside but not quite on the inside. The only thing I might do differently is add some garlic powder or seasoned salt to the batter to give it a little more flavor. They went great with our grilled sausages. Thanks!
Great! Beer batter was even fine with a Miller Light! Will make again, thanks.
Great with wings!
I'm definitely going to use this very simple, and highly successful batter recipe for everything deep fried: fish, veggies, tofu, onion rings, hot dogs! I used Guinness because it's so thick and frothy; it worked marvelously!
I made these with Canadian Burgers with Beer Braised Onions and Cheddar (since we were already cooking with beer). We used Samual Adams Light and felt these needed some spice. We made a couple batches and the second batch we added some seasoned salt to the oions, n dusted lightly with salt and they were perfect for our tatse. We will be making these again!
WOW! Light, crispy, almost tempura like. I think it is the letting the batter sit that makes this work so well. I drink Modelo Especial and used that. I don't think a light beer would have much flavor for this recipe, but I don't think light beer has any flavor for drinking either. Vidalias would be nice, but I had some plain old yellow onions and they worked fine.
Really good and really simple. My fav beer is a porter and it was awesome in this batter. I didn't use ANY seasoning but had dips and the rings didn't need anything else. I used the leftover batter to coat a skinless chicken breast and it was also awesome. Golden brown is the perfect color for these, don't over fry them.
Pretty Good!! I used a miller lite, and followed the recipe except I added a teaspoon of Cajun Seasoning, and a 1/4 tsp of salt and pepper. THANKS!!
Very very easy, but definitely needed seasoning. I only added salt and pepper and they turned out awesome. Amazingly simple and better than most restaurants. My kids loved them, thanks!
This worked perfect. I added some Old Bay seasoning and black pepper is all.
I used this recipe last night. It was easy to make, and that's a plus, but it lacked in the flavor department. I added some hot sauce on the finished product, as well as some salt, which is a given. This will work, it just needs a little kick. They brown up nicely.
Very good- I made it using Hefeweisen and you could definitely taste the beer. I also added a dash of salt, garlic salt, and pepper to the batter. They were a hit at the Superbowl party.
Delicious!!
Made this twice. The first time as written. It was a little bland, probably because we couldn't add much salt afterward due to diet restrictions. The second time I added a tsp. of Old Bay Seasoning, a bit of salt and pepper to the batter after it sat for the hour. It didn't need any salt afterward. So tasty, golden and crispy and this will be used over and over again. Best ever!
We whipped these up last night and I must say these were the BEST home-made onions rings either of us have ever had. I added garlic powder, kosher salt, and black pepper to the batter along with 8oz of Red Dog beer, Ummm! Light and golden, crisp and delicious. Thanks for sharing this extremely simple recipe with us!
