Ingredients

  • SPAGHETTI SAUCE:

  • 2

    tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 1

    garlic clove

  • 2

    tablespoons white wine

  • 1

    can tomato paste - (12 oz)

  • 1

    tablespoon sugar

  • 1

    tablespoon basil

  • 2

    ounces margarine or butter

  • 1/2

    minced onion

  • 2

    cups water

  • 1

    large can tomatoes

  • 1/2

    teaspoon baking soda

  • Salt to taste

  • Freshly-ground black pepper to taste

  • 1

    can tomato puree - (29 oz)

  • Mushrooms washed and sliced

  • MEATBALLS:

  • 1

    pound ground beef/ veal/ pork mixture

  • 2

    eggs

  • 1/4

    cup milk

  • 1

    tablespoon parsley

  • 1/4

    teaspoon pepper

  • 1

    tablespoon minced onion

  • 1 1/2

    slices bread

  • 1/4

    cup bread crumbs

  • 1/2

    tablespoon salt

  • 1/4

    teaspoon garlic salt

  • 1

    tablespoon parmesan cheese

Directions

Beat eggs well and add to ground meat. Soak bread in milk, drain well and add to meat. Add bread crumbs and remaining ingredients till well blended. Roll meatballs to size desired. In a 3-quart sauce pot, brown meatballs in oil and margarine. Remove from pan. Saute in pan mushrooms, garlic and onion till golden brown. Add wine and cover 2 to 3 minutes. Add 1 cup of water and cover for 1/2 hour. Add paste, puree, tomatoes, and 1 to 2 cups of water to consistency desired. Add sugar, baking soda, basil, salt and pepper. Drop browned meat balls in sauce. Cook for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. This recipe yields 6 servings.
