Spicy Puffs

MY NOTES: These would be delicious with a dollop of strawberry jam in the middle of each one.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 vegetable shortening
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/4 cups sifted flour

Preparation

Step 1

Scald milk. Put it in a large bowl with shortening, salt, sugar and nutmeg. Blend and cool to lukewarm. Add dry yeast to warm water. Let it sit for 5 minutes then stir well; add to milk mixture. Mix in egg and flour. Beat 1 minute. Scrape down sides, cover and let rise until double (11/2-2 hours). Beat down dough. Drop by spoonfuls into greased muffin pan. Let rise 1/2 hour, or until dough reaches the tops of the cups. Bake 12-15 minutes in preheated, 400 ° F oven. Remove from pans and let cool.

In a small bowl mix:
1/2 cup sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Melt 6 tablespoons butter in a saucepan; set aside. Quickly dip cooled puffs into melted butter and roll in sugar/cinnamon. Makes approx. 12 puffs.
