Sally Lunn Bread
By Addie
“Grandma didn't know who Sally Lunn was, but she said she made good bread.”
Ingredients
- 1 envelope dry yeast
- 1/2 cup lukewarm water
- 1 cup milk, scalded, slightly cooled
- 8 tablespoons (1 stick) butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
Preparation
Step 1
Grease and flour a fluted tube pan.
Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water in a small bowl. Add milk and mix well.
Combine the butter, granulated sugar and egg yolks in a large bowl. Beat with an electric mixer set at high speed until creamy.
Combine flour and salt in a small bowl and mix well. Add flour mixture and yeast mixture alternately to butter mixture, beating well after each addition.
Spoon batter into prepared tube pan. Let rise, covered, in a warm place until double in size, about 21/2 hours.
Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
Bake bread until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean, about 30 minutes. Cool in tube pan for 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving plate. Serve warm with honey butter.
