Patty Melt III

By

"Another easy sandwich that my boys liked. They had trouble with onions, but I chopped them REALLY fine and I don't know that they knew they where there, did you guys, lol."

Ingredients

  • 1 slice American cheese
  • 1 slice swiss cheese
  • 1/4 lb ground beef
  • 1/4 cup onions, sliced or 1/4 cup onions, diced
  • 3 tablespoons butter, divided
  • 2 slices rye bread

Preparation

Step 1

Sauté onions until golden in 2 tablespoons butter until translucent and lightly golden. Remove from the pan.

Form the meat patty so it will fit the bread. Grill to desired doneness.

Butter bread on one side; put buttered side down on hot griddle, put 1 slice cheese followed by onions then cooked patty, followed by cheese.

Butter one side of the other slice of bread and place on top buttered side out.

Fry until bread is crisp but not burned (I have trouble with this part), turn over and do the same thing on the other side. Cheese should be well melted. Slice on the diagonal.

This was made for my dinner on 5/27/08, and as part of "A Taste of Yellow 2008 " and for "April Showers Bring May Flowers 2008 ".I've eaten several patty melts in my life, and this happens to be the best I've ever had.The only swiss cheese I had was block, so a little of that was shredded and used.Since my bread was shaped a little different than other rye breads, I did have a little trouble turning it over. But other than that, this will be made again.

This is a great, simple recipe. I liked the combo of melty-american & tangy swiss. I also like a big dash of worsterchire (?) on top & a slather of mustard. THANKS!

This is a great sandwich!

Easy summer meal we love to make! We grill the burgers on the George Foreman to make it a little easier.

I haven't had a patty melt in 20 years! These are soooooooo good. My 5 picky eater kiddos said they were better than burgers!lol I used swiss cheese only as we didn't have American on hand. I formed the patties on a cookie sheet making them quite thin and lightly seasoned with salt and pepper. I partially froze the patties to make them easier to work with. I cooked the patties on the bbq grill outside then brought them in to assemble and pan fry. They tasted delicious! Thanks.

Wonderful -- restaurant quality and easy to make! I made it once according to the recipe and then tried to cut back on calories by using lean beef and just 2 tablespoons light margarine...both tasted great. Thanks!

Yum! I made two of these and used more beef. I also salt and peppered outside of the patties before cooking (personal preference). This is a great recipe!

5 stars in my book!! I made it per the recipe. Why mess with perfection? Simple and delicious!

Yummy, and so easy to prepare on a HOT summer day.I used Russian Rye bread, and family said,"nice change."I ate mine with sweet and hot mustard.DH put Thousand Island dressing on his. Thanks for the new twist on and old hamburger!

Trying to get DH to rave about much outside of hamburgers can be difficult. THIS did the trick! I didn't have swiss, or rye - so I used thick sourdough and american & cheddar cheese. I used 90% lean beef and mixed a bit of pepper, onion powder and a tsp of olive oil before grilling. It turned out fantastic. Thanks for a keeper!

We were very happy. Mike especially loved this meal (I made 4 total so use a whole large onion and 1lb meat...etc) since I have been on a health kick lately he was happy to see this on his plate. Along with potato wedges and slaw this was a great meal. Didn't have rye bread, Mike made fresh white so we used it. It was still good but I will use rye next time as we both thought it would make it perfect. We also used sharp cheddar cheese, Mike's preferance. The combination of the two cheese really makes this a winner. I thought I would want ketchup or something on it but I really didn't, the sandwich has enough flavor without, why ruin it. Thanks for sharring this great recipe.

This was really really good!! I made SuzieD Rye Buttermilk Bread Rye Buttermilk Bread for the bread and hid the onions in the meat from my family! This was wonderful!! Thanks for posting!!

I loved this. I made no substitutions. My husband has never really liked patty melts, but after eating this he said he's willing to give them another try! Thanks!

We liked the flavor of this sandwich. I made it according to the recipe. It was a little rich for us so next time I will use a little less butter on the bread.

This IS the real deal:)I absolutely love Patty Melts, and this is spot on. I, too use Thousand Island dressing on the side, but no changes to the recipe!!Thanks!

I made these for a lunch for the adults gathered at my house for the Xmas Holidays today. I adore patty melts and have for 30 years. This is the real deal and substitutions should not be made. My 14yo stepson had never had one and he said, "I never want a hamburger again!" He LOVED the grilled rye bread. I never in a million/billion/jillion years would have thought he would... he is a picky eater who doesn't even like onions. I made it for the adults but the smell intrigued him so much he wanted a taste... then he ate my sandwich and I had to make myself another and then an hour later, he wanted another! I am shocked. I do like some Thousand Island dressing on the side for dipping... also good with ham and cheese. Thanks, dienia! Maybe I can get the little monster to eat onions in other things, now. He loved this sandwich! Now- I am afraid- I have to keep a loaf of rye bread in the house at all times...thanks a lot. Lol. Smirk. :-( But- now- his young eyes have been opened to the glory of sauteed onions...so THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Yum. I subbed cheddar for the American cheese, and doubled to make 2 sandwiches. I used a whole small onion. This came together quickly for a weeknight meal with frozen french fries & a side salad.
