Not Too Sweet Buttercream Frosting
By commercecook
After making a batch of buttercream frosting, then throwing it away because it was just too sweet, I discovered this recipe. It will be my go-to recipe for frosting from now on. It takes a few steps, but worth the aggrevation.
Ingredients
- 1 cup milk
- 4 tablespoons flour
- 1 teaspoon vanilla
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 1 cup sugar
Preparation
Step 1
Stir together the milk and flour. Cook over medium heat, whisking constantly so it doesn't stick to the bottom of the pan. Cook for about 3 to 4 minutes, until it thickens into a smooth paste. Spoon into a bowl and set aside to cool completely.
When mixture is cooled, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla and beat for 4 minutes. Set this aside.
Beat together the butter and sugar at a high speed on your mixer for 4 minutes. Check to make sure that it is not too grainy. If it is, beat another 30 seconds. Add the flour/milk mixture and beat for an additional 3 minutes.
Yum. When I finished, there was no grain texture to the frosting. It was smooth and just the right consistency.
