Almond-Toffee Bars

By

These buttery cookies start with a graham cracker crust and are topped with layers of creamy chocolate, crunchy nuts, and pieces of toffee candy.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter or margarine
  • 1 1/2 cups quick-cooking rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 1 cup semisweet chocolate pieces (6 ounces)
  • 1 cup almond toffee pieces
  • 1 cup chopped or sliced almonds
  • 1 14 ounce can sweetened condensed milk

Preparation

Step 1

Heat oven to 325 degree F. Melt butter or margarine in a 13x9x2-inch baking pan in the oven (about 6 minutes). Remove pan from oven. Sprinkle oats and crumbs evenly over melted butter or margarine; press lightly onto bottom of pan using the back of a large metal spoon. Sprinkle the chocolate pieces, toffee pieces, and almonds evenly over crumb mixture. Drizzle all with sweetened condensed milk.

Bake for 25 to 30 minutes or until edges are bubbly and center is just lightly browned. Remove from oven and immediately run a narrow metal spatula or table knife around edges of pan to loosen the cookie. Cool completely in pan on a wire rack; cut into bars.

Variation Toffee-Fruit Bars:Substitute 1/2 cup snipped dried apricots for 1/2 cup of the chocolate pieces. Continue as above.

Make Ahead Tip Cover pan and store in the refrigerator up to 3 days.

REVIEWS:

I found these to be too crumbly, and they got more so after a day, then 2 days. I prefer the original 7-layer bars recipe.

My family LOVES these bars. My daughter has an egg allergy and this is her favorite treat. Note to self: Add coconut!

Taste was good, but didn't hold up well as far as a "bar" goes... too crumbly and difficult to cut. Won't make again.

These are wowie zowie good. I used some smashed Girl Scout shortbread cookie crumbs instead of the graham cracker crumbs--the cookies had taken a header off the top of the refrigerator and were already pretty crushed--and when I took the almonds out of the freezer a bag of coconut came too. I took this for Divine Intervention and added coconut--wow. Amazing. So easy and so delicious. Talk about a wonderful recipe.

Excellent. I made it with walnuts instead of almonds and it was very good.

Delicious and so easy. I modified by using Heath Bar toffee piecesin place of almond pieces and pecans in place of almonds. I have used this recipe many times and everyone loves them. Also, this is a nice change from the "Magic Bars."
