Toffee Bars

By

Topped with walnuts, and featuring a creamy layer of rich chocolate, these decadent bar cookies are like your favorite toffee candy -- but better. Serve them warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup semisweet chocolate pieces
  • 1/3 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1/3 cup chocolate-covered toffee pieces

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl beat butter with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add the brown sugar, egg, and vanilla. Beat until combined, scraping sides of bowl. Beat in flour and salt until combined.

Spread dough evenly in an ungreased 13x9x2-inch baking pan. Bake for about 15 minutes or until edges begin to brown and surface is dry. Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle with chocolate pieces. Let stand about 2 minutes or until chocolate is softened; spread evenly. Sprinkle with nuts and toffee pieces. Let cool in pan on wire rack 30 minutes. Cut into bars. Makes 36 bars.

REVIEWS:

These were incredibly easy to make, and extremely pantry-friendly. I came home from work, and had a craving for something salty & [mostly] chocolatey sweet! So what next? I turned to my handy-dandy BHG, and was not disappointed. These were perfect, quick and definitely hit the spot. I WILL be adding this to my recipe book! Oh, and one more thing - I used sliced almonds instead of walnuts/pecans. It's what I had handy, and was delish!

This recipe is soooo yummy. I added coconut flakes after spreading the chocolate and replaced pecans w/ macadamia nut. Delicious!

I love toffee anything and this recipe is great for one who has to watch carbs. Thanks for the recipe, love it!!

I am so glad I found this recipe. My mother-in-law always made this and now that she is no longer with us no one can seem to find her recipe. When I printed it out and gave it to may sisters-in-law they were thrilled. They said it is exactly their mothers recipe. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
