Ingredients

  • 1 C flour
  • 1/2 C natural or dutch processed cocoa
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 6 Tbs unsalted butter at room temperature
  • 2 Tbsp vegetable shortening
  • 1/2 C packed brown sugar (free of lumps)
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla
  • 3/4 C chopped walnuts

Preparation

Step 1

Position racks in upper and lower thirds of the oven. Line two baking sheets with parchment or foil.
In medium bowl combine the flour, cocoa baking soda, baking powder and salt. Mix thoroughly with wire whisk.
In stand mixture with paddle attachment beat the butter, and shortening on medium speed until creamy. Add both sugars beating until well combined. Beat in the egg and vanilla. Turn the mixture to low speed and beat in the flour mixture just until incorporated. Mix in the nuts.
Drop heaping teaspoonfuls of batter about 1 1/2 inches apart on baking sheets. Bake for 10 12 min. After 5 min switch the pans from top to bottom and rotate them from front to back to bake evenly.
