Strawberry (or Blueberry) Buttermilk Biscuits, Becky’s Strawberry (or Blueberry) Buttermilk Biscuits

Ingredients

  • Topping:
  • 2 C sifted flour
  • 1/2 C sugar
  • 3 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/3 C Crisco shortening
  • 1 tsp grated orange peel
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 3/4 C buttermilk
  • 1/2 C frozen blueberries or strawberries (Must be frozen)
  • 2-3 Tbs butter, melted
  • 3 Tbs sugar
  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon
  • Dash of nutmeg

Preparation

Step 1

Preheat oven to 400 degrees

Mix first five ingredients. Cut in Crisco until mixture resembles coarse sand. Add orange peel, mix. Mix egg and buttermilk; add flour—stir to blend. Add frozen blueberries and stir. Transfer dough to lightly floured surface. Knead 5 or 6 strokes. Pat dough to ½ inch thickness. Cut out biscuits with a floured two-inch cutter. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 15 minutes or until brown.

Mix topping ingredients and brush on warm biscuits.
