Black Magic Cake (Best Chocolate Cake Ever!)

By

Lisa's Notes:

When my mother passed away, a close family friend made us two wonderful cakes. One was the Kentucky Apple cake, which was a hit with the big guys, and the other was this moist, dense chocolate cake, which was a hit with my three sons and their friends. My twin boys requested this for their birthday with one stipulation - they each wanted their own cake, just for them! Oh, and don't be thrown off by the inclusion of coffee in the recipe. You would never know it's there. Matter of fact, if my boys knew it was in there, they would freak out since they hate coffee!

Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 1 3/4 cups all purpose flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup strong black coffee, cooled
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon real vanilla extract
  • ..................................................
  • CHOCOLATE FROSTING:
  • 1/2 cup margarine, softened
  • 2 oz melted unsweetened chocolate, cooled
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons milk
  • 2 teaspoons real vanilla extract

Preparation

Step 1

Combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl or stand mixer.

Add eggs, coffee, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla.

Beat at medium speed for two minutes. Batter will be thin.

Pour batter into a greased and floured 9x13 pan or two 9 inch cake pans.

Bake at 350 degrees for 35-40 minutes for a 9x13, or 30-35 minutes for layer pans.

Combine frosting ingredients and mix with a hand or stand mixer. Spread frosting on cooled cakes.

REVIEWS:

I've made the same chocolate cake for 30 years, tried this and I now have a new favorite chocolate cake! Thank you for the recipe!

I tried this recipe and say it's Family Tested & Approved!

This is a truly delicious cake!

Great recipe Lisa. I learned a long time age that coffee enhances the taste of chocolate. I don't tell my family either. This will become a family favorite and rightly named Black Magic Chocolate Cake.

I have always been a dessert freak, and for the dessert to be any good at all, it HAD to have lots of butter, eggs and a moderate amt. of sugar. I've baked 'em all when it comes to chocolate cakes, but this one - very similar to the choc. cake recipe on the Hershey's Unsweetened cocoa box - isn't loaded with butter or eggs, but you'd never know it. It is the richest and most densely chocolate of any chocolate cake I've ever tasted. I add instant coffee granules in my recipe from the Hershey's box.

I've had this recipe for many years. My sister in law made it and I got the recipe. my 2 grown daughters with families of their own make it and we all love it. I think it has too strong a taste of coffee as it stands and my husband and I drink instant coffee. So I use a hot cup of water and just a little (1/2 teaspoon or less) of instant coffee in the recipe.nIt is jut as good and not as bitter as a cup of coffee. I have a special recipe for the icing that compliments the cake much better than chocolate icing.

Great recipe!!! I love this cake.... My daughter made it with peanut butter frosting for my birthday.

Very nice... the only thing I did different was I made a Chocolate Cream Cheese frosting instead of the one listed. Mmmmm yummy.

Good twist on the Hershey Chocolate Cake recipe!! I did what you do...use coffee and buttermilk...my family is 'gaga' over this one! Awesome cake!!

This cake is delicious...moist and yummy! Love the frosting recipe but I did use butter! Will be making this again for sure!

I made this today. I happened to have INSTANT coffee granules in pantry from a previous recipe. I microwaved about 1/4 cup water and added THREE heaping teaspoons of instant coffee granules to dissolve, then added the add'l 3/4 cup COLD water to cool. For the frosting....I ALSO used TWO teaspoons of instant granules dissolved in 2 TBS water (COOLED) and used that for the liquid instead of the milk. Can you tell I LOVE coffee, and with the chocolate in the cake AND the frosting, i think this is going to be AWESOME with the coffee flavor coming thru! :)

This a AWESOME recipe!! Love it:) It is so.... moist....YUMMY !!
