Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 cup butter or margarine, softened
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1 egg
  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp cream of tartar
  • Creamy Decorator's Frosting, Decorator's Glaze, or Royal Icing (see below)
  • Creamy Decorator's Frosting
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla
  • 1 Tbsp water or 1 to 2 Tbsp milk
  • Few drops of food coloring, if desired
  • Mix all incredients in small bowl with spoon until smooth and spreadable
  • Decorator's Glaze
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 2 Tbsp water
  • 2 Tbsp light corn syrup
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • Beat all ingredients in small bowl with electric mixer on low speed until smooth
  • Royal Icing
  • 1 package (16 oz) powdered sugar (4 1/2 cups)
  • 1/3 cup warm wter (105 - 115 degrees)
  • 3 Tbsp meringue powder
  • 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract
  • 1/2 tsp cream of tartar
  • Food colors, if desired
  • Beat all ingredients in large bowl with electric mixer on low speed until mixed. Beat on high speed 7-10 minutes or until very stiff. Divide and tint with food colors.

Preparation

Step 1

Beat powdered sugar, butter, vanilla, almond extract and egg in large bowl with electric mixer on medium speed, or mix with spoon. Stir in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours.

Heat oven to 375. Lightly grease cookie sheet. Divide dough in half. Roll each half 1/4 in thick on lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes with 2 1/2 inche cookie cutters. Place about 2 inches apart on cookie sheet.

Bake 7-8 minutes or until edges are light brown. Remove from cookie sheet to wire rack; cool completely. Frost with Creamy Decorator's Frosting; decorage as desired.
